Tsuka Japanese Samurai Sword Fitting Hilt Tiger And Mantis Late Edo

TSUKA JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD FITTING  HILT TIGER AND MANTIS

LATE EDO

l  The motif
of Fuchi is Tora or Tiger.

l  Kashira
made of Suigyu no tsuno or Water-buffalo
horn

l  The motif
of Menuki is Kamakiri or Mantis.

l  Mantis and
tiger are expressed strong and bravery of Samurai.

l  This tsuka
was discovered at the residence of Samurai in

Wakayama Pref. (western part of Japan).

l  Even
though there is no signature, the metalworker of Fuchi

had a remarkable
carving skill and used high quality of materials.

He might come from
Goto family.

l  Judging
from the work of Menuki, the metalworker seems to come

from Mino school.

l  I cleaned
up Fuchi (Pommel on the hilt) and

Menuki (Hilt Ornament) before listing.

l  As you
see, Tsuka-ito (the cord wrapping on
a sword hilt) has damage,

but Samegawa
or ray skin is good condition.

l  Menuki –
come with a wooden box
